DDR4 & DDR5 price rises

It seems A.I. is consuming the majority of the DDR5 chips being produced pushing up the prices for consumers and forcing manufacturers to give up on DDR4.

Thanks to the memory demands of AI and key manufacturers reducing production, DDR4 RAM prices have been steadily rising over the past few months. However, this rapid rise has now turned into an overwhelming surge, and in the space of just one week, DDR4 modules have almost doubled in price.

We were shocked to see spot prices for DDR4 modules reach $13 when we reported on it last week. So you can imagine my surprise when I saw the spot price for a 2 GB DDR4-3200 module averaged $25 yesterday (via semiconductor analyst Ray Wang, on X).

So RAM is a little pricey now...
Attached is a small sample of Scans pricing of 4800MHz DDR5 RAM.
We won't be able to afford the computers to use the AI soon...

I would agree that a bubble is about to burst in computing.

Luckily me & my son are set with 32GB, I also picked up a 'spare' white kit I was going to swap with him but thinking I might keep it sealed for now.

Unsurprisingly the second hand market has already followed suit.

This 16GB 5600MTs DDR5 Laptop Memory* was £18 + £2.95 P&P at CeX (although obviously free to collect if you visited one of the branches which had it), with a decent number in stock, around the start of September.

Today the price is £40 + P&P, but is completely out of stock, with the rest of their DDR5 Laptop Memory listings being out of stock too.

All of their DDR5 Desktop Memory is out of stock too, except for this last kit of 64GB (2x32GB) Corsair Vengeance RGB Grey 5600MTs at £370 + P&P at one branch, but although I've got no idea how much that would have cost previously, it's probably safe to assume it still would have been much less than that.


* Brand isn't specified, so presumably they just grab the first thing that happens to match the specs that they have in stock.

I assume they're out of stock as their trade in prices dont appear to have kept up with their new selling prices.

It really is mad that you could pick up 32GB of 6000 CL36 for about £80 not that long ago.

Annoyingly I have a spare 64GB DDR4 kit, I was earmarking it for a secondary build.
However, now I don't know whether to cash in on it as I paid over the odds for it at the time, but not these levels! But at the same time if things don't improve anytime soon, and predictions are correct at 12-18 months, then I'll not have an opportunity to buy something for quite some time.

I'd probably keep it, you certainly won't struggle to sell it in a few months if you decide to, so nothing lost.

I'd be interested to see other component prices and how the market reacts to reduced demand, total build cost might actually be not that bad if everything else becomes cheaper!

I'd even said I don't know what its worth, someone make me an offer, I'd rather sell it on here to help someone out than sell it on the bay to make more money lol...

Price checks rarely get a response. Did you list an actual price for the stuff as offers only isn't allowed? If you did so not sure what the ban was for?

Stick that stuff on here? much smaller audience though I'm afraid.
