Oh, wot a shame. I feel sorry for them. I can feel a tear forming in my eye. It couldn't happen to a .... oh, who am I kidding? The biter bit! Hoist by their own petard (whatever a "petard" is), and other appropriate sayings.
More seriously, personally, I do beleve there is a necessary level of protection for a company's IP, simply to prevent overt rip-offs that some ... erm ... countries, are notorious for, BUT there is also taking that same type of protection to extremes where it is simply anti-consumer. In this specifc example, it probably comes down on the "necessary level of protection" side, but Son have also been guilty of some truly obnoxious anti-consumer practices. One such practice, apparently now a thing of the past, was nobbling audio CDs with rootkit software for PC users. That was just disgraceful, and leaves me with very little sympathy for Sony.
Another couple of relevant sayings ... what goes around, comes around ... and 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'. Oh, and there's something about the fickle finger of fate. I think maybe fate just used that finger to give Sony a large "digitus impudicus" ... i.e. flipped them the bird.
Yes, I'm in one of those strange moods tonight. And no, it doesn't involve either booze or ... illicit substances. I sometimes manage it entirely without chemical assistance.
