Switch 2 anyone?

Post by Saracen »

So, anyone tempted? Or already succumbed? If you have, what do you think so far?

As for me, historically not really my bag, but despite some things I don't like (like the degree of online tie-in) I have been thinking about it. There are things I like, such as reported perfrmance boost, bigger screen and so on.

But then, the price. And more specifically, the price of games ... though to be fair, console games are rarely cheap, regardless of platform.

But I think the killer for me is threefold :-

- no OLED option. At least, not yet.
- joystick drift reportedly STILL not resolved.
- rather iffy battery life.

And then there's my likely usage, which will be mainly or entirely at home. I already have a SteamDeck (top model, prior to OLED), and had thought about the OLED. I might yet do an "oh wat the hell" and maybe flog the exiting one. So I already have access to reasonable portable console gameplay (could be improved by OLED Steamdeck, obviously) when I REALLY want a portable unit.

But my health means my main gameplay is usually sitting in bed. Which is (partly) why a new PC tempts me, but I'm also very tempted by PS5 Pro (which, yes, sill has an online account-based orientation I'm not chuffed about). But which, graphically, is (I would expect) markedly better than Switch 2 or Steamy OLED.

Had the Switch 2 had an OLED option, I might well have put up wih the drifting risk and the 'mediocre' battery life (reports vary). But the non-OLED is a non-starter for me, and no, I'm not waiting maybe 2 or 3 years for the OLED.

So, despite still getting twitches in my credit card .... nope. :D

Given the time yes I would love to get one. I still see Nintendo consoles as being different enough from a PC, Xbox and PS5 that I would have one for certain game types. Mainly platformers.
But as my Wii-U has sat in a cupboard since not long after I bought it, it's sadly unlikely to be anytime soon.

Odd that the Switch 2 didn't come out with an OLED.

Many industry commentators seem to be saying that the reason for not being OLED is, first, it's expensive enough as it is and that would drive the price up a fair bit. And second, that doing it this way means they can release Switch 2 OLED later, and a fair few people will promptly upgrade. By "later", though, the consensus is probably 2 or 3 years, which makes holding out for it somewhat unappealing.

Of course, that's all effectively speculation. Well, probably speculation. Clearly, only Nintendo could give accurate answes to all that, and they won't. So "speculation" from commentators could be anything from 'finger-in-air' wild guesses, to unofficial but inside information from a leak. Sometimes, those "leaks" are, just like politicians, direct from VERY senior insiders that want the information out there, but "off the record" and unattributable.

I've been retired for a long time now, but back in the day, there were more than a few occasions where I had hardware (even beta hardware) months before it was released. A classic case was HPs first colour laser. I heard one salesman in a shop confidently telling a potential customer all about it, and getting about half wrong, 4 or 5 months before public availability. I knew much of what he said was cobblers, because one of what HP told me was TWO units in the country at that point, was sitting in my test area at home. I 'might' have commented that I'd "heard" a few things that contradicted Mr Salesman. He wasn't happy though. :D

Nah, I'm still considering a 3DS XL.
I'll pick up a Switch when you lot are all playing on 4-D direct brain input devices, and the Switch costs a tenner.

Switch 1 owner and game price for that is off-putting enough - laggy low graphic ports of games for significantly more than on other platforms mostly! The 'too small' joy-cons are perfect for a child so do enjoy playing with my little one, and definitely cornered the 'family friendly' market the same way the Wii did (same market, different way I guess), but no real incentive to upgrade at this time. If I want something looking nice on my big screen TV then that's what the PS5 is for.

Just a comment on the OLED issue. I've just watched Tom @ TechGuy's 10 minutes on Switch 2" video and he commented that he spoke to a contact at Asus, and asked, paraphrasing, "Why no 120Hz OLED on Ally" and the answer was ... "It was just so expensive".

So that "it'd cost too much" speculation may well be dead on target.

My daughter ended up with two somehow. After the excitement of actually getting one I said how is it and she just said "meh!".

Just more of the same with more expensive games. Mario kart is nothing to write home about, you drive for ages in open world and get to a race with only one lap.

At the present, not recommended
